What is World of Dance Bay Area 2024?

World of Dance (WOD) is a global dance competition platform that showcases various styles and genres of dance. It is the world's largest dance entertainment enterprise, elevating artists and brands with events, entertainment, and digital engagement. The brand includes the NBC American Reality competition TV series executive produced by Jennifer Lopez.

What is New Age Theatrics?

New Age Theatrics is a professional performing arts company based in San Jose, CA. As of today, they hold the title for World of Dance Bay Area 2024 and Ultimate Brawl XXI 2024 Champions. This team embodies dedication, creativity, and an unyielding passion for dance, making them a force to be reckoned with in the competitive dance scene.

WOD Prep Experience

Surgery

Before WOD, I was overseas and underwent surgery that required a 2-3 day hospital stay. The procedure involved an excision on my neck, and I was intubated, which damaged my voice. Initially, I was devastated by the thought of not being able to perform at World of Dance, but I remained determined to support my team and participate in training as much as possible. I told my directors Erika and Francis that I will not be able to perform. I was so touched when they showed concern about my health and when they reassured me that they will be here whenever I am ready to come back. I thought I had to quit because of my situation and my inability to commit, but I’m so grateful they kept their doors open for me.

My love for training with New Age Theatrics was a significant motivator in my recovery. Being with New Age is the most fun I've ever had, and everyone in the team is incredibly motivated, determined, and kind-hearted. Being part of this team has helped me grow not just as a dancer but also as a person.

Managing my recovery involved a lot of rest and careful stretching. The nerves in my neck were damaged, leaving my neck tight and numb. I needed to extend my range of motion little by little, also hoping the nerves would somehow grow back. My doctor said it would maybe take months, years, or it will stay this way, no one can really tell. Training leading up to the competition was intense as we focused on cleaning our set, which we had already performed a few months prior at Prelude NorCal 2023.

Challenges

Post-surgery, I struggled with reduced physical strength and stamina. I felt like I had a lot of catching up to do to match my pre-surgery performance level.

Just a week before the competition, the directors asked if I could perform in the closer. My brain hesitated, but my heart was all in! The directors checked in on me regularly and ensured I had enough practice to feel comfortable performing. I am incredibly grateful for their trust in me.

The closer is the last piece of the performance, tying everything together for the grand finale. Being part of this segment was a tremendous honor and responsibility.

Leading up to and during the performance, I felt a whirlwind of emotions—nervousness, excitement, and immense pride. The adrenaline was at its highest, and I felt deeply emotional about being on stage with my team.

Lessons Learned

This experience taught me that fulfillment in dance comes from the journey and the people you share it with, not just the performance. I learned the importance of being prepared to step in and support the team in any capacity. Even when I wasn't sure I'd be performing, I trained with the mindset that I could help out in case of any absences or emergencies.

Our journey at World of Dance Bay Area 2024 was unforgettable, and I am grateful for the support and trust of my team. This experience has strengthened my resolve to pursue dance passionately and contribute to the art form in any way I can.
